From plugin ZIP to a working AI chatbot.
Install WP Chat AI through the normal WordPress plugin workflow, connect your own OpenAI API key, configure the chatbot for your site, and test its answers against your WordPress content.
Use the standard WordPress plugin uploader.
WP Chat AI installs like a normal ZIP-based WordPress plugin. No command line, external hosting, or separate chatbot service is required.
Log into WordPress
Open your WordPress administration panel, normally at yourwebsite.com/wp-admin.
Open the plugin uploader
Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, then select Upload Plugin.
Upload the ZIP file
Select the WP Chat AI ZIP file you downloaded, click Install Now, and let WordPress finish the installation.
Activate WP Chat AI
Click Activate Plugin. After activation, open AI Search in the WordPress admin menu.
Create or open your OpenAI API account
WP Chat AI needs access to the OpenAI API to generate answers and create embeddings for semantic site search. Your ChatGPT subscription and your OpenAI API billing are separate services.
Make sure API billing is available
Add funds or configure billing in your OpenAI API account before testing the chatbot. When the available API balance is exhausted, the chatbot cannot generate new AI responses until API access is restored.
Create an API key
Create an OpenAI API key for the site, copy it, and keep it private. Do not publish the key in a page, post, theme file, public repository, or other visitor-accessible location.
Enter the key in WP Chat AI
In WordPress, open AI Search and paste your OpenAI API key into the plugin settings. Save the configuration before testing.
Adjust the experience for your website.
After the API connection is working, configure how the chatbot looks, what extra context it receives, how it behaves when the page loads, and how much usage a single visitor can generate.
Chatbot title
Set the title shown in the chatbot interface so it fits your website or brand.
Initial message
Write the first message visitors see, such as a short welcome or an invitation to ask questions.
Colors and presentation
Adjust the chatbot color scheme so the interface works with the visual design of your WordPress site.
Additional context
Add business details, service information, policies, product information, or other useful context beyond normal page content.
Open or closed by default
Choose whether the chatbot should automatically open for visitors or remain closed until they choose to use it.
Transition delay
Adjust display timing to control how the chatbot transitions into view and feels within the rest of the site experience.
Per-minute request limits
Restrict rapid repeated requests from the same visitor or IP address to discourage automated or excessive use.
Per-hour request limits
Set a broader hourly ceiling to help control abuse and keep OpenAI API expenses more predictable.
Ask the questions your visitors will actually ask.
WP Chat AI uses embedding-based search to locate relevant WordPress content before generating a response. Final testing should therefore focus on both the quality of the generated answer and whether your underlying site content contains the information visitors need.
Try questions about your most important services, products, policies, pricing, locations, contact process, or other topics visitors regularly need help finding.
Your chatbot is ready when the answers are useful and the limits are in place.
